Healthcare Scene Announces The Inaugural Health IT Expo

Health IT conferences are getting a makeover! The team at Healthcare Scene is rallying a collaborative community of Health IT problem-solvers to be part of something special – the newly announced HITExpo18 ( HITExpo18 will be May 30 – June 1, 2018 at the New Orleans Marriott and produced by Healthcare Scene – a renowned blog network that brings context to the latest news and innovations in Health IT.

Health IT conferences are intended for hospital CIOs to convene and discuss best practices for tackling the tough challenges they face. Unfortunately, it has become more and more difficult for CIOs and their teams to cut through all the noise at traditional industry conferences to find solutions that fit their organization’s needs. These events have recently become a sea of sales demonstrations. Worse, many of these demonstrations are nothing more than “vaporware” and many are for technologies that fall beyond their three year priority list. It’s not surprising that many hospital CIOs have begun to avoid health IT conferences entirely.

John Lynn, co-organizer of HITExpo18 and editor of Healthcare Scene, will be the first to question, “Do we really need another Health IT Conference?” In a recent article, he explains how flipping the traditional conference and focusing on solving problems allows room for a new type of conference to become go to for Health IT professionals.

Healthcare Scene prides themselves on the fact that they have never been – and never will be – a typical media company. Their mission is to create a virtual and in-person community that fosters collaboration between various stakeholders.

HITExpo18 will be different because:

  •       In each session there will be equal time for Q&A.
  •       There will be more panel discussions and unconference sessions that allow attendees to contribute, rather than just observe lectures and powerpoints.
  •       Presenters will address the pressing challenges of today, even though these topics may appear “boring.” (e.g. Dev Ops, Patient Communications, and Operational Alignment)
  •       All panelists and presenters will contribute to an e-book that will be given to all attendees with 100+ takeaways they can implement in their organizations immediately.
  •       Organizers are discouraging vendors from sending salespeople and encouraging them to send product managers instead.

“No one in healthcare can be successful on an island. We must collaborate with other hospitals, other Health IT professionals and even Health IT vendors to really maximize our use of technology to improve healthcare,” explains David Chou (, Vice President and Chief Information & Digital Officer at Children’s Mercy Kansas City. “HITExpo18 is building that collaborative community where we can all support and learn from each other.”

The ethos of HITExpo is disrupting the status quo of Health IT conferences – and just like their innovative approach to reinventing conferences, the team wanted to reinvent their online presence. HITExpo joined the brands and organizations advancing health by launching the conference on a .health website.

“When we were looking for a domain, we wanted something short, memorable and fresh for our inaugural Health IT conference. Expo.Health was the natural choice.”

– John Lynn, Co-founder of HITExpo
