From panels to parties, the dotHealth team shares memorable moments from HIMSS.
Members of our dotHealth team just returned from an action-packed HIMSS17, and we wanted to recap a few of our favorite highlights. Spanning everything from robotic telemedicine devices at InTouch Telemedicine’s booth to a rapping physician at athenahealth’s Cloud Party, there was never a dull moment in Orlando at HIMSS17.
The Person Behind the Patient
Fostering a more consumer-centric experience in healthcare is near and dear to our dotHealth team, so we made sure to attend Dr. Joshua Newman’s (Salesforce’s Chief Medical Officer) session about healthcare consumerism which discussed understanding the person behind the patient. During his presentation, Dr. Newman explained how the healthcare industry can learn from other industries’ best practices and understand patients’ expectations are set from experiences in different industries.

Hip Hop at HIMSS
Beyond the educational presentations, HIMSS is known for its afterhours parties. If you are familiar with the athenahealth team, you know that no other company can throw a party quite like athenahealth. They sure didn’t disappoint this year, as ZDoggMD rapped live at their Tuesday night Cloud Party. If you couldn’t make the party, don’t fret – you can still jam out to ZDoggMD’s “notoriously” catchy, lyrically genius “Big Pharma”… to the tune of “Big Poppa”.
VR For Patients
Most consumers are aware virtual reality (VR) is the next big thing for gaming, but HIMSS17 was an eye-opening experience (no pun intended) in understanding VR impact in healthcare. The scientific and healthcare communities are now learning more and more about the clinical benefits of VR and its applications to patient care. AppliedVR has partnered with Samsung to provide hospital bound patients with a “Netflix” platform of validated therapeutic content. Read more of their published research here. Naturally, our dotHealth team’s curiosity drove us to try AppliedVR’s technology ourselves at the Power Press Party at House of Blues on Sunday night. Needless to say, “swimming with dolphins” at a HIMSS party was quite an unique experience. Our team can’t wait to learn more about how VR is poised to improve patient care. (And next time, we’ll make sure to snap a pic of ourselves mid-VR!)
Year after year, HIMSS is the health IT industry’s premier event to debut new products, make an announcement, or show off a new look. A standout unveiling was ContextMedia’s rebranding to Outcome Health and the first major conference appearance of their brand’s sleek new name and image. Lookin’ good Outcome Health!
In order to look to the future you need to learn from the past and while the conversation at HIMSS usually centers around the future and what’s ahead, we enjoyed learning some HIMSS history. We caught up with John Templin who has been coming to HIMSS since 1977. John boasts twenty seven ribbons on his HIMSS badge. We think that’s quite an accomplishment!
Compiling highlights of HIMSS can be overwhelming considering every moment at the conference you are inundated with new technologies, exposed to forward-looking trends, and overloaded with stimuli on the exhibit floor. We believe the most inspiring part of HIMSS is learning about the future in the ever-changing world of health IT. As creatively depicted by the artist at IMO’s booth (in the main picture above), you can see that the launch of .health is on the horizon.
